The Jamie Larcombe Centre Update
On 10 November 2016, Minister for Health, the Honourable Jack Snelling, and Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, the Honourable Leesa Vlahos, announced that the new Veterans’ mental health precinct at Glenside Health Service Campus will be named “The Jamie Larcombe Centre”. The name of the centre was selected after extensive consultation with the Veteran community.
The precinct is named after Sapper Jamie Ronald Larcombe. Jamie was born in Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, he joined the Army in 2008, deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 and was tragically killed in action on 19 February 2011. The naming of the centre is a tribute to the service and sacrifice of Sapper Larcombe.
Jamie’s parents and three sisters attended the naming of the site and planted a Lone Pine Tree, which will be the centrepiece of a new memorial garden. Jamie’s family requested that a small group of Jamie’s friends be invited to the share the announcement and to support the family on the day.
Jamie’s family spoke of his leadership and the importance of mateship, stating that “he would be delighted, as we are, that his legacy will live on through a place dedicated to helping other diggers.”
“The Jamie Larcombe Centre” refers to the precinct as a whole. The remaining areas within the facility will be known by their functional names: inpatient ward, outpatient area, memorial garden and hub.
Schiavello Construction SA has commenced work on the site for The Jamie Larcombe Centre, construction is scheduled to be completed late in 2017. On completion an official opening ceremony will be held, with opportunities for the Veteran community, stakeholders and interested members of the community to tour the new state-of-the-art facility.
The purpose-built design will provide 24 single bedrooms with ensuites, a gymnasium, family spaces, enhanced outpatient area, games room, a Partnerships Hub and education and research space.
