The Jamie Larcombe Centre

In an Australian first, post-traumatic stress research and clinical care will be co-located together at the new $15 million Jamie Larcombe Centre, with the new Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) Research Centre. The Hon Peter Malinauskas MP opened the centre on 8 January, 2018.

The Australian Centre of Excellence for Post-Traumatic Stress provides an opportunity for researchers working on interventional therapies to work closely with patients and staff.

It also provides an opportunity for researchers from all over Australia and internationally to collaboratively undertake research that will benefit the health and wellbeing of veterans.

Background

The new research centre is supported by The Road Home, an affiliate of The Hospital Research Foundation, responsible for raising awareness and funds to support health and wellbeing research and programs into conditions such as PTS for the nation’s veterans, emergency service personnel and their families.

The Jamie Larcombe Centre opened in November 2017 and is named in honour of Sapper Jamie Ronald Larcombe, who was born in Kingscote, Kangaroo Island and was killed in action on 19 February 2011 during a deployment to Afghanistan.

The Centre includes an ambulatory service incorporating outpatient treatment areas, 24 single rooms with private ensuites, consulting rooms and a gymnasium.

Quotes attributable to Health Minister Peter Malinauskas

Our Veterans deserve nothing short of the best possible care and this new research initiative cements Jamie Larcombe Centre’s reputation as a Centre of Excellence for Post-traumatic stress and other related conditions.

It will allow clinical treatment and research activity to integrate, ensuring we continue to improve care, innovate and develop a best practice model for Veteran’s mental health.

South Australians should feel extremely proud of the Centre, which is setting a new international standard in translational research in the field of Veterans’ mental health.

Quotes attributable to Australian Centre of Excellence for Post-Traumatic Stress researcher Dr Jon Lane, supported by The Road Home and The Hospital Research Foundation

The Centre of Excellence provides a platform for our work to be shared globally to reduce duplication of work, enhance research outcomes and ultimately create greater efficiency for research funding.

My research is focused on the development of a service that enables Veterans to help their own peers through a qualified level of care. This means we can enhance the health services provided at the Jamie Larcombe Centre by helping patients recover quicker and reducing admissions, which will enhance the overall health of our community.

As a Veteran who served in Afghanistan, it is a great privilege to work alongside other researchers and clinicians to develop a new care model that incorporates research.
