Joe’s father fought in World War I. After being wounded in France, he was sent to England to recuperate. After he was better, he returned to the front line in France where he was wounded again.
When he was sent to England the second time to recover, he met his future wife. When they came out to South Australia, Joe’s father received a soldier settler’s block, halfway between Pinaroo and Loxton.
Life was tough, and when Joe’s father fell off his horse and tore the ligaments in his shoulder, Joe at the age of 11, had to take over his father’s duties on the farm.
Listen to this remarkable story as Joe reflects on his father’s service in World War I and his own service for the Royal Australian Air Force in World War II.
